In my first "sales" role I wasn't even selling!

No one, not even the sales rep who trained me, taught me how to sell, because I didn't need to sell anything.  


My job involved driving around in my company car to see my customers, and taking their orders on my green order pad.


Meh! That's not selling!! That's being an order taker!


My second sales role required real selling skills.


Skills like:  

  • Asking great questions.
  • Global listening.
  • Objection handling.
  • Clarifying.
  • Presenting how our service would close the gap.
  • Asking for the order.


Training for my second role?


My manager handed me a thick, badly photo-copied sales manual, and told me to read it until I had it memorized. I was also able to observe the "experienced" sales people in action. 


Coaching? It was non-existent.


It wasn't ideal, but I made the best out of it and excelled in that role.


But things would have been so much easier for me if someone had provided me with regular feedback through coaching. 


Coaching? Now there's a novel idea. 


NOT!


Think about it. 

Why does every elite athlete have a coach? Because they know coaching helps them perform at the highest level possible.
